I have officially found one of Tasmania’s best kept secrets; a hideaway in the South that offers a peaceful, environmentally friendly and wildlife-filled stay. Just 20 minutes from Hobart, below the famous Mount Wellington, you’ll find the Hobart Hideaway Pods. As the name insinuates, these pods are hidden away from the CBD while offering all the comforts one could wish for on a holiday. Take a break from reality, get yourself to the Pea or Vanilla pod and experience ultimate tranquility while taking in your beautiful surroundings.
Location:
You’ll find the pods just a 20 minute drive from Hobart’s CBD. They are just close enough to see and do everything in Hobart if you have a rental car, but far enough away that you feel comfortable and at peace with nature amongst Tasmania’s true beauty. In the nearby town there are shops and restaurants as recommended by Clare for you to eat at, or bring some food back to the pod and admire the view like we did with some great Tasmanian produce.
The Pods:
The ‘Pea Pod’ and the ‘Vanilla Pod’ are the two eco-friendly pods on offer, each with slight differences. I stayed in the Pea Pod and fell in love instantly when we pulled into the driveway. Stepping in the door and looking out over the paddock and through to the Derwent River, I was just simply in awe. The bifold doors were opened immediately, the kettle was turned on and we sat with a hot cup of tea in absolute peace. Could you really imagine a better spot to cosy up with a book and tea?!
Aside from the remarkable views, the Pea Pod has everything you could possibly need for your stay, and it is relatively new, too! A king-size bed and kitchenette will greet you in the main area, while a spacious bathroom sits behind. Wifi, games and a TV is available for entertainment if you somehow don’t already find the wildlife around you amusement enough! The property is surrounded by native hens that love to bingle, alpacas, sheep and possums to name a few. At night I even spotted a Tawny Frogmouth on the road, stopped to move him and ended up patting and talking to him for a few minutes before he flew away. The wildlife in Tasmania really is so tame and in abundance!
Eco-friendliness:
Just when you thought the pods couldn’t get any better, their eco-friendliness will cause you to love this place even more. Clare and Jimmy’s environmentally consciousness is evident from the design right down to the composting toilets. Let me assure you, these aren’t the kind of toilets you may envisage at first - they are quite luxurious, I promise! Another plus is that each toilet saves about 60,000 litres of drinking water per year (yes, you read that correctly!) They also use a reed bed wastewater treatment system as well as building materials that are sustainable. The pods are extremely warm as well due to the solar passive design Clare and Jimmy have chosen. Knowing how eco-friendly these pods are makes them even more charming.
I honestly couldn’t recommend staying in the Hobart Hideaway Pods enough; it was truly hard to say goodbye. This is the kind of property I would love to live on permantly one day and Clare and Jimmy have given me so much inspiration! The Pea Pod is a secluded sanctuary surrounded by nature and not far off from the heart of Hobart. You really will feel so comfortable here, or like two peas in a pod!
