Checking in to Launceston’s Most Unique Accommodation: Alice’s Cottages

If you find yourself in Launceston and are down for the most unique accommodation on offer, look no further than Alice’s Cottages and Spa Hideaways. Never have I stayed in a place so quirky and comfortable while simultaneously filled with history and treasures around every corner. From records to books to antiques, Alice’s has that beautiful old world charm we all want to loose ourselves in from time to time.

Location:

Alice’s is just removed a tad from the heart of the city, which is something that I actually enjoyed. We had a rental car, so we were able to get to all the attractions you would want to see within minutes or you can walk into the city within 10/15 minutes!

The Cottage:

I was fortunate enough to stay in the Aphrodite cottage; a ‘sunny rococo style villa’ built circa 1910. As Aphrodite is the goddess of love, the cottage is definitely just as romantic as the name insinuates. Colours of gold, white, blue and red are found in the antique furniture and right up to the hand painted ceilings. It’s these details that really make the place unique.

The house is quite large and could even fit four people as there are two beds. The Aphrodite cottage provides you with a double spa, fully equipped kitchen, a spacious bedroom, lounge room and dining room as well as a back and front yard. The grounds are dotted with an assortment of flowers and even a pet cat by the name of Ziggy that roams freely. Rob and Louise will leave you a basket of food for breakfast to prepare in your kitchen, which is such a sweet touch.

There are smaller rooms available with varying themes such as Scottish, English, Irish, Welsh, Camelot and Boudoir; plenty to choose from to tickle your fancy and budget.

To Do in the Area:

I’m not going to lie, there isn’t too much to see and do in Launceston, but what I did see was great! I did only have a day to explore anyway, so here is what I got up to!

Cataract Gorge & Chairlift

Probably one of Launceston’s most popular attractions, the Cataract Gorge is about 15 minutes walk from the centre of the city or a two minute drive. There is way more to the area than what initially meets the eye, trust me! Here you’ll find walking trails, peacocks galore, the world’s longest single span chairlift, a restaurant with an incredible view, gardens and the suspension bridge. Is it weird to say the peacocks were the highlight?! We could’ve watched them all day as they tried to impress the ladies!

I would suggest walking around the Gorge, admiring its immense size, bouncing across the suspension bridge and then riding the chairlift back. It costs $12 one way and is totally worth it - I mean, look at the view!

Macaque Monkeys in the City Park

After checking out the city, we wandered into the pleasant City Park where some of my favourite animals cheekily awaited us! These Japanese Snow Monkeys are definitely a little out of place in Launceston, although they are used to the chilly climate and are so entertaining nonetheless. We spent the afternoon snapping photos, laughing and watching these little guys as they groomed each other, fought, screamed, swung from branches and ran around like little humans.

Eat

One of the best meals I had in Tasmania was in the city at the Prickly Cactus Mexican restaurant! Get there for happy hour and fill up on $4.50 margaritas and quesadillas. Just thinking about their food gets my mouth watering! We also enjoyed having a cup of tea on the balcony at Alice’s where you can prepare food in the kitchen if you’re after a night in!
