I recently spent my first solo weekend away at an iconic, luxurious and historic hotel by the name of Largs Pier just outside Adelaide’s city on Semaphore beach. I’m not going to lie, I can’t really fault my stay here. I stumbled in (well, I was more so blown through the entrance by Adelaide’s torrential weather) and was greeted by friendly faces before heading to the restaurant for one of my favourite meals topped off with wine and champagne. The moody weather couldn’t dampen my mood as I spent the next two days getting to know the Largs. From the food to my room fit for a queen to the balcony views over Semaphore beach, I knew from that first night it was going to be a great weekend.
Largs Pier Hotel
Some of you may recognise the name from Jimmy Barnes’ song ‘Largs Pier Hotel’… don’t worry, I didn’t either, but the music history behind the Largs is really fascinating! This beauty was built back in the 1880’s and since then has seen the music careers of many Aussie legends thrive. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s, just a few bands and musicians established their careers at the Largs. I guess you may of heard of Cold Chisel, ACDC, The Angels and The Little River Band (who hasn’t?!). If walls could talk…
Anyway, back to the finer details. The Largs is home to just about everything you could need during your stay in South Australia. You’ll find a spacious bar, pokie room (where I can usually find my Grandmother and delicious restaurant. The hotel is heritage listed, so it makes for something different than your typical, modern hotel, which is something I love. Just wait until you see the rooms…
I opened the door to my Heritage Room and for a minute thought they had made some kind of mistake… I mean, this room was fit for a queen! Initially, you’ll enter into your dining room, which seats up to 12 people and is available to hire for corporate and special events. The shock factor didn’t stop there as I turned to my left to find a pure white bathroom with black and gold details that was just about bigger than my bedroom at home. Obviously I had to soak in the deep circular spa the next day after all my driving and hiking.
The next room comprised of a king four-poster bed and yes, it was even more comfortable than it looks! A large TV and coffee and tea making facilities are available in the bedroom too – all the necessities! One of my favourite parts, however were the sweet little french doors that opened up to an expansive balcony facing the beach and esplanade. It was the perfect spot to have breakfast and admire the beauty of the location.
The Dining Facilities
If you know me well, then you know I LOVE my food. The Largs offers quality breakfast, lunch and dinner to hotel guests and visitors alike. Just check out my dinner from the first night and let your mouth water! Everyone’s food looked delicious and I have to say, that was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had! Plus, the red wine and champagne went down a treat with my family and I.
I couldn’t say no to dessert one night and snuggled up in bed with a chocolate and peanut butter brownie. On my last morning, I decided to treat myself to breakfast in my room as I waited and prayed for blue skies to arrive before I departed. Eggs Benedict, orange juice and coffee are some of my favourites and the Largs did not disappoint, plus just look at the view from my balcony!

In my humble opinion, Adelaide City isn’t where you want to stay when visiting South Australia. The Largs Pier Hotel is located just a 20 minute drive from the heart of the city and is in a much more peaceful and scenic area known as Semaphore. Plus, they have free onsite parking, so just rent a car and get yourself into the city for a few hours if that’s your thing. I feel that if you’re coming to Adelaide, there is much more to this part of Australia than city life as it is home to some of the most underrated and picturesque beaches in the country.
The Largs sits just opposite Semaphore beach and jetty and has amazing views down the coastline. I wandered around one windy morning and felt the area was super relaxing. Dogs were playing on the beach and birds were flocking on the jetty. I can imagine in summer the area is filled with beach goers!
When it came time to check out, it was one of those moments where I didn’t want to leave just yet as I enjoyed my stay so much. Not only is the hotel just beautiful inside and out, plus the history behind it is just fascinating to me, but the people were so kind, too. Sometimes your stay can really be defined by the people in the hotel, and the Largs staff were just so welcoming and helpful! I feel it is more than just a place to rest your head at night; its an experience. From the dining to the luxurious rooms, to the location and history the Largs has seen over its many years of operating, you can’t surpass the opportunity to stay here the next time you find yourself in South Australia!
I was welcomed as a guest of the Largs Pier Hotel, however, as always, opinions are my own.
