Exploring Kolonaki, Athens with Periscope Hotel

Rooftop Spa Athens Hotel Periscope

After many years of dreaming, I finally touched down in Greece and was welcomed to not only some seriously perfect Greek sunshine, but a stylish and comfortable place to rest my head by the name of the Periscope Hotel. This artsy design hotel sure is easy on jet-lagged eyes; after over 32 hours in transit from Australia, I felt so welcomed and relaxed the moment I set foot in the lounge area and met the friendly staff. After hitting the ground running and wandering through the streets of Kolonaki, I can safely say I have found the ideal hotel for travellers who would prefer staying away from the touristy part of Athens, while still being centrally located!

The Design & Facilities

Perhaps one of the coolest little design hotels I have ever had the pleasure of resting my head, the Periscope Hotel, in my opinion, has nailed the modern, artsy and minimalistic boutique hotel concept. From the moment I set foot inside, the artwork and design immediately caught my eye. With the installations of fish and people swimming on the roof, amongst the deep blue decor, you really do feel as though you’ve found yourself in a luxury, underwater oasis. The hotel describes the lobby being based on the theme of a periscope operating underwater – amazing!

My favourite facility of all, and I’m sure everyone else would agree, was the complimentary snack and drink bar. Before hitting the ground running and exploring Kolonaki, what better way to fuel up than with a coffee, cake and cold drink!? This was such a nice touch that really made us feel welcomed and appreciated as guests – our stomachs loved it too!

The Room

Periscope is home to 22 rooms, of which are comfortable, stylish and filled with everything you could possibly need. From free Wifi to a comfortable bed and luxurious amenities, it’s all here. The hotel has aimed to attribute its rooms to clean lines and uncluttered spaces, along with an artsy, urban feel. The highlight for me has to be the old, black and white aerial view of Athens lining the roof and looking down upon you as you lay in bed; such an interesting and unique touch!

Now, Athens really knows how to do killer rooftop views, and Periscope’s rooftop spa and view is no exception! If you want to experience this paradise above the city, it can be all yours if you book out the two level Penthouse Suite. Super romantic, and photogenic, of course!

The Location: Kolonaki

If you’re looking for a hotel that will provide you with an authentic, less-touristy experience of Athens, then Periscope is the place for you! Pretty much everything you could possible ask for is within walking distance! The metro is just a 5 minute walk away, that will get you to all of the popular attractions in just a few minutes. If walking is more your style, you’re only a 10 minute stroll away from the popular Syntagma Square and then onwards to more attractions!

Coming back to the Periscope after a long, hard day of exploring Athens feels like a relaxing haven just minutes from the hustle and bustle.

To Do Nearby

Wander the picturesque streets: Set off out of the Hotel and simply get lost in the surrounding streets. I loved the fact that the neighbourhood is quite peaceful compared to other areas of Athens, and also incredibly photogenic! The mandarin tree-lined streets and sun-bathing cats make the area all the more charming.

Hike up Mount Lycabettus for sunset: If you find yourself in Athens, let alone the neighbourhood, you cannot miss out on what has to be one of the best views over the city. Mount Lycabettus is the highest point in Athens, and offers 360 degree views from the mountains, through to the Acropolis and out to the Aegean Sea. Wander about 5-10 minutes up hill to the cable car and catch a ride up to the top. Grab yourself a drink or dinner at one of the few restaurants and admire the view as the sun falls over the city. I can easily say this was one of the best sunsets I have ever witnessed; what a way to start my time in Greece, hey!?

Dine at one of the many cute Greek restaurants: For dinner, wander around the Kolonaki area and you will quickly stumble across many cute little Greek restaurants! It is quite hard to choose as they all appear to be so inviting and trendy! I think my Tzatziki and cous cous salad will be food I’ll be dreaming about for a very long time…!

I was welcomed as a guest of the Periscope Hotel, however, as always, opinions are my own!
